Cost
It is important to understand the fifth "C"- Cost - because, cost and value are not necessarily the same. Sometimes, a "sale" item can cost as much, if not more than, a non-sale item. You see, to offer a substantial discount of say 50% or more, many merchants will inflate the original price of the diamond beyond its real value and then discount the price back to reality; consequently, a "sale". The fact is that all stores must build into the selling price of a diamond three things: the overhead, the profit margin, and the cost for the diamond itself. The "discount" may shimmer like an oasis before the consumer, but up close it may well prove to be a mirage.
