Diamond Carat Weight

The abbreviation ct refers to the weight of a single diamond.

The abbreviation ct TW stands for carat total weight and expresses the total weight of several diamonds used in a piece of jewelry.

Carat weight vs. size

We use carat weight as a measure for other gemstones, but different gems of the same weight aren’t necessarily the same size. That’s because some gemstones are denser than others and pack more weight into a smaller size.

How carat weight affects value

Larger diamonds are rarer and in greater demand than smaller diamonds of the same quality, so they can be sold for a higher price. A one-carat diamond solitaire ring is usually more expensive than a ring made of several smaller diamonds of similar quality even though they total one carat or more.

Carat weight is only one characteristic you should consider before buying a diamond.
